Staying fit and healthily is important no matter how old you are. However, when you are a senior it can mean the difference between life and death. Therefore, senior fitness comes down to two things, eating right and keeping a work out regimen.
While it is important for seniors to work out they have to be careful not to over stain their bodies. This is because after a certain age, your body is not able to heal or recovery from injury as rapidly. So it is very good to go to yoga classes or do Pilates as these forms of exercises help you stretch and put very little impact on your joints.
At the same time, you have to put a little bit of strain on your body to keep those muscles strong and your endurance up. So seniors have to find a balance that allows them do to both of these things. Lots gyms and senior centers now offer classes a few times a week and teach you exercises that cater specially to your needs.
If you are a senior, it is very good to do low impact exercise as well as some weight bearing exercise. Things like walking or going on the elliptical are very good. And lifting lighter weights but with more repetitions is also very good. It doesn't take much to maintain your health but the results are fantastic.
If you are in a wheel chair or have lower mobility that is okay. Simple things like wading in a pool or slowly talking a walk. Even gardening or playing with your grandchildren all help you burn some calories and keeps you feeling young.
Diet is another important part of senior fitness. Just because you are getting older doesn't mean you can eat whatever you want. You have to maintain and balanced nutritious diet in order to keep healthy. Also taking multi-vitamins or supplements is not a bad idea because they will help you stay fit and live a long healthily life.
